The Open Championship 2026: Last-Chance Qualifier at Royal Birkdale (2025)

Get ready for a nail-biting finish! The Open Championship is shaking things up in 2026 with a brand-new 'Last-Chance Qualifier,' promising a dramatic showdown for a coveted spot in the tournament. This exciting addition will debut at the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.

This means twelve golfers will get one last shot to make it into the prestigious field. The R&A made the announcement, and the qualifier will take place on Monday, July 13th. Imagine the pressure! The event is designed to amp up the excitement and provide fans with a thrilling early-week experience.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, the chief championships officer at The R&A, shared his enthusiasm, stating that the qualifier will bring high-quality competition and drama as players battle for that final spot. He emphasized that every player at Royal Birkdale will have earned their place, and the qualifier will be a thrilling spectacle.

So, how does one get into this exclusive event? The 12-player field will be selected based on a tiered eligibility system, similar to how players already qualify for The Open.

Here's a breakdown of the eligibility criteria, in order of priority:

  • The top two non-exempt players in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) as of July 6th.
  • The runner-up from The Amateur Championship, provided they remain an amateur by July 13th.
  • Players who narrowly missed out on qualifying through a playoff at Final Qualifying.
  • Players who finished just one position behind those who secured a spot in The Open at Final Qualifying.
  • Players who tied for a qualifying place in Open Qualifying Series events (excluding Scotland) but didn't qualify due to their OWGR ranking.

Because the number of eligible golfers is likely to exceed the available spots, invitations will be extended in the order of the exemption categories until the field is full. A reserve list will follow the same sequence. The R&A has noted that a replacement from outside the published exemption structure would only occur in exceptional circumstances.

But here's where it gets controversial... The qualifier also impacts the tournament's reserve list. The first two reserves, who will also compete in the Monday event, will retain their reserve status until the full field begins play on Thursday. Remaining reserve positions will then be assigned based on the finishing order in the Last-Chance Qualifier. OWGR rankings will be used as a tiebreaker, unless a playoff decides the final qualifying spot. Any ties after the 18 holes will be settled in a playoff.

Players will be notified as they become eligible, with most confirmations expected by July 1st. Additional spots will be finalized after the July 6th OWGR release.

This new qualifier is set to ignite the excitement as the season's final major returns to Royal Birkdale, where Jordan Spieth claimed his third major championship in 2017.

What do you think of this new format? Do you believe it adds to the drama and excitement, or does it potentially dilute the exclusivity of the tournament? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
